Baía das Gatas

Baía das Gatas is a wide crescent of calm Atlantic water on Santiago's eastern coast, backed by a village of the same name and enclosed by a sweep of volcanic hills that shelter it from the open ocean swell, creating a bay so still and clear that it functions as a natural swimming pool in an island nation where most beaches are buffeted by strong Atlantic wind and surf throughout most of the year.

The bay became internationally known through the music of Cesária Évora, whose 1985 song Sodade and its video shot at Baía das Gatas brought the location to global attention, establishing it as a cultural landmark as much as a natural one and seeding a mythology around the place that draws visitors who arrive with the music already in their heads, making the bay a destination where landscape and cultural memory are inseparable.

Each August the annual Baía das Gatas music festival transforms the village for three or four nights, bringing Cabo Verde's leading morna and coladeira performers to a stage set above the water and attracting Cabo Verdeans from the diaspora who time their holidays around the event, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a family reunion than a commercial festival and that spills out from the formal venue into the village streets and beachfront bars.

The beach itself is a narrow strip of dark volcanic sand that shelves steeply into water that is deep enough to swim in within a few metres of the shore, a characteristic of many Santiago east-coast beaches that results from the island's volcanic geology rather than the gradual sandy slopes found on Sal or Boa Vista, and that makes the bay immediately appealing to swimmers who find the shallow-water wading at other beaches tedious.

Around the bay's edges, volcanic rocks create natural tidal pools that are safe for children at low tide and attract small fish and crustaceans that make them interesting for snorkellers who venture out with basic equipment, a low-key activity that offers the most accessible reef experience on the island without the need for boat travel or dive certification, and that is most productive in the early morning when the water is still and fish are closest to the rocks.

The village behind the beach has a handful of small restaurants and guest houses that have grown up to serve the festival trade and summer weekend visitors from Praia, and while the scene is modest compared to the resort infrastructure of Sal, it has a relaxed authenticity that visitors who seek out Baía das Gatas specifically tend to find more appealing than the more polished tourist environments elsewhere in the islands.

The setting of Cesária Évora's iconic Sodade video gives the bay an outsize cultural significance that makes it a place of pilgrimage for fans of Cabo Verdean music.
