Bandingilo National Park

Bandingilo National Park occupies a substantial area of central South Sudan in Central Equatoria State and forms a nearly continuous conservation landscape with the larger Boma National Park to the north-east. Together these two protected areas create a wildlife corridor of national and potentially transboundary importance, linking savanna ecosystems across a significant stretch of South Sudan's interior. The park encompasses a mix of savanna grassland, acacia woodland and riparian forest along seasonal watercourses that drain into the wider Sudd system to the north.

The park is known for resident populations of African elephant, buffalo, and the Rothschild giraffe, which finds suitable habitat in the acacia savanna and riverine woodlands. Rothschild giraffes are a subspecies largely confined to Uganda and South Sudan and their presence here is a notable conservation highlight. The park also supports lion, leopard and spotted hyena as top predators, alongside smaller carnivores such as the African wild dog. Birdlife is diverse, with the acacia and riverine habitats hosting numerous raptor and waterbird species characteristic of the region.

Unlike the more famous white-eared kob migration that passes through Boma, Bandingilo is primarily a year-round wildlife destination where animals are resident rather than migratory. This makes it potentially more predictable for observation during the dry season months when wildlife concentrates around permanent water sources. The landscapes are visually striking, especially in the golden grass of the dry season when the open savanna extends to the horizon and large herds are visible from considerable distances.

Bandingilo was gazetted as a national park during the period of Sudan-wide wildlife conservation legislation, though the precise year of designation requires verification against official records. Like many of South Sudan's protected areas, it has received limited investment in infrastructure, anti-poaching patrols or visitor facilities since independence. The park faces ongoing pressure from pastoralist encroachment, charcoal production and occasional poaching, though precise current conditions are difficult to confirm from available sources.

The proximity of Bandingilo to Juba makes it one of the more accessible remote parks in South Sudan by light aircraft, though ground access remains challenging and the park does not function as a conventional tourism destination. Its value lies in its role as part of a large conservation landscape and as a refuge for species such as the Rothschild giraffe that have limited remaining habitat. Scientific surveys of the park have been sparse and a comprehensive wildlife census would provide valuable baseline data for future conservation planning.

As part of a contiguous conservation corridor with Boma National Park, Bandingilo plays a critical role in South Sudan's wildlife landscape and connectivity.

Resident populations of Rothschild giraffe, elephant and buffalo are observable year-round, making the park a reliable destination for dry-season wildlife viewing.

Its relative proximity to Juba by aircraft makes it more accessible than other South Sudan parks for organized conservation-minded visits.
