A closer look

Battir is a landscape made by patience. The hillsides west of Jerusalem are steep, the soil thin, the climate Mediterranean but arid enough that without deliberate water management nothing would grow. Over centuries, the farmers of Battir built and maintained a terraced growing system: low stone walls following the contours of the slope, channels fed by a network of springs, and a set of shared water rights that regulated who could draw from which source on which day. The landscape is agricultural in the truest sense — it is a human construction as much as a natural one.

The terraces are visible from the train line that runs from Jerusalem down to the coastal plain, a sight that surprises travellers expecting only desert. The green of the valley floors and the neat horizontal lines of the walls catch the eye against the brown hillsides, and at certain times of day the water in the channels flashes in the sunlight. This is not a preserved ruin or a managed heritage site — it is a working farm landscape, and the people of Battir still grow figs, olives and grapes here exactly as their grandparents did, using the same irrigation schedule negotiated under Ottoman rule and recorded in a communal registry.

The agricultural calendar in Battir follows the seasons with a precision that feels ancient. Vines are pruned in late winter, olives harvested in October, and the wheat plots cleared in late spring. The dry-stone walls require constant maintenance — a collapsed wall means the terrace above it loses its moisture retention and the soil can wash away in a single rainstorm. The community has maintained these walls through an informal labour exchange system that functions as both practical cooperation and social cohesion, reinforcing the knowledge that each farmer's terrace depends on the neighbour's.

The threat to Battir is concrete and specific. The Israeli separation barrier, already built on the hillside to the east, would if extended cut across the upper terraces and sever the water channels that feed them from the springs on the Palestinian side. A proposed highway route along the same corridor would further fragment the agricultural land. The village has organised protests and legal challenges, and the case has drawn international attention because the landscape represents a rare example of living agricultural heritage rather than a reconstructed monument. UNESCO inscribed Battir on the World Heritage List in 2014 and its endangered list in 2016 precisely because of the threat posed by the barrier.

What makes Battir remarkable is not any single monument but the fact that the whole system remains alive. The farmers still walk the same irrigation paths their great-grandparents walked, the springs still flow, and the dry-stone walls still hold back the hillside in the same way they have for at least the Roman period. This is not a landscape frozen in amber but a living practice, and the uncertainty about its future is inseparable from the experience of visiting it today.

Battir is a rare example of a living agricultural landscape that has operated continuously since at least the Roman period, maintaining both its physical structures and its communal water-management traditions.

The dry-stone terrace system is a sophisticated piece of applied hydrology, with water channels and spring-sharing agreements that demonstrate centuries of cooperative land management.

The landscape provides a vivid illustration of how heritage and contemporary politics intersect: the Israeli barrier and proposed highway directly threaten a UNESCO World Heritage site.
