The tower is the first thing you see from the valley floor: a tapering glass obelisk that catches the Pyrenean light at all hours, its surface never quite the same colour twice as the sky shifts from the hard blue of a winter noon to the amber fade of an autumn evening — a landmark that announces Escaldes-Engordany's intention to be taken seriously as a spa destination, not just a mountain afterthought.

The hot spring water emerges at 68°C from the granite bedrock of the Pyrenees and is channelled directly into the pools without chemical treatment, its mineral content (sulphates, calcium, magnesium) giving it a faintly opalescent quality in the outdoor pools that is particularly visible on cold days when the steam and the water temperature contrast sharply with the mountain air.

The indoor lagoon, Caldea's largest body of water at around 1,200 square metres, is kept at a constant 34°C and surrounded by classical columns that give the space an unexpectedly Mediterranean civic character — a deliberate architectural quotation that distinguishes it from the naturalistic stone settings of the outdoor pools.

The Inúu wellness centre, added in 2014 as a adults-only annex with a separate entrance, offers a more clinical range of treatments — thalassotherapy circuits, aqua-balance sessions, deep-tissue massage — in an environment that trades the public buzz of the main complex for a quieter, more purposeful approach to thermal therapy.

The outdoor thermal circuit in winter is the most dramatic experience: water at 38°C against air temperatures that can fall to minus 10°C, creating a wall of steam wherever the water moves, with the lights of Andorra la Vella visible below and the ski slopes of Grandvalira glowing on the mountainside across the valley.

At 80 metres, Caldea is Andorra's tallest building — an improbable record for a structure whose purpose is essentially about rest and warmth — and one that has anchored the development of Escaldes-Engordany as Andorra's principal wellness district, with a concentration of hotels and clinics that has no equivalent elsewhere in the country.

The water's high mineral content means the pools require careful rinsing after use, and the thermal circuit is designed to move guests through a progression from cooler to hotter pools in a sequence that mimics the traditional Pyrenean spa ritual of alternating heat and cold immersion — a practice rooted in the Roman bathing tradition that has persisted in this valley since antiquity.
