A closer look
Walking from Tha Pae Gate into the old city, the scale drops immediately: the moat is close on one side, the brick walls frame the streets, and the temples appear at short intervals.
Late afternoon brings a soft haze over the moat and the tiled roofs; the streets feel slow and human.
Evening the Sunday Walking Street fills parts of the old town with stalls and a steady crowd; outside the market hours the same streets are quiet again.
It was the capital of the Lanna kingdom from 1296 and remains the cultural core of northern Thailand.
The walled square, the moat and the surviving gates are legible at street level.
It concentrates more than a dozen historic Buddhist temples within walking distance, several of which are UNESCO-listed.
