A closer look

The Chocolate Hills of Bohol are a geological formation of extraordinary visual effect: more than 1,200 cone-shaped limestone formations rising out of the flat agricultural plain of central Bohol province, clustered most densely around the municipality of Carmen, in a near-perfect state of geometric repetition that is difficult to accept as entirely natural.

The hills vary in height from roughly 30 to 120 metres, their smooth grass-covered sides rising in a clean convex slope to a rounded peak. The prevailing geological explanation is that they are the product of the solutional weathering of a limestone bedrock that fractured and uplifted perhaps 1.5 to 5 million years ago, leaving behind these distinctive cone shapes. The cap of the hills is composed of a thin layer of limestone detritus that has protected the underlying cone from further dissolution, preserving the shape over geological time.

The name comes from their appearance during the dry season from March to May, when the grass covering each hill turns brown and dies back, leaving the hills looking exactly like an enormous field of chocolate drops spread across the green-and-brown landscape. In the wet season the same hills are vivid green, and the two seasonal appearances give the place an entirely different character depending on when you visit.

The view from the main Chocolate Hills Complex observation deck near Carmen is one of the most photographed landscapes in the Philippines: a seemingly endless repetition of conical hills rolling to the horizon in every direction, the effect almost too regular to be believed without seeing it in person. A second viewing area at Sagbayan Peak offers a panoramic view from the opposite side of the formation and is particularly popular at sunrise.

The geological origin of the Chocolate Hills has been the subject of scientific debate, and alternative theories exist beyond the solutional weathering model. What is broadly agreed is that the formation represents a rare and unusual karst landscape produced by a combination of limestone dissolution, tectonic uplift and the protective action of the grassy surface layer. The Chocolate Hills were designated a National Geological Monument by the Philippine government in 1997.

The ecological character of the Chocolate Hills area is as interesting as the geology. The hills are not bare rock—they are covered in a layer of grass and scrub that changes colour with the seasons and supports a small but distinctive community of endemic plant and animal species adapted to the rocky grassland environment. The flat agricultural plain between and around the hills is used for rice, corn and coconut farming, and the transition from the cultivated plain to the rocky hill slopes creates a mosaic of habitats that supports a wider range of biodiversity than the hills alone would suggest. The Philippine government has proposed adding the Chocolate Hills to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a karst landscape of outstanding universal value, though as of this batch the nomination process has not been completed. For visitors, the surrounding area of Carmen and Sagbayan towns also offers cave systems, butterfly sanctuaries and small resorts that can fill a two- or three-day itinerary beyond the hills themselves.

The density and geometric regularity of the hills create a landscape with no equivalent elsewhere in the Philippines or Southeast Asia.

The seasonal colour change from green to chocolate-brown gives two genuinely different visitor experiences within the same site.

The declaration as a National Geological Monument in 1997 reflects the scientific consensus that the formation is a rare and significant karst landscape.

Best season
March to May gives the brown dry-season landscape that earns the hills their name. The green wet season (June to October) offers a completely different but equally striking vista. November to February is shoulder season with moderate crowds.

The dry season view is the most visually distinctive; rainy-season visitors should not be deterred as the green hills are equally remarkable in a different way.
