Douala

Douala is Cameroon's largest city and the undoubted economic engine of the country, a dense and perpetually energetic port metropolis where the Wouri River broadens into an estuary before meeting the Atlantic, its waterfront defined by container terminals, oil installations and the constant movement of trucks and commerce that has made it the commercial capital of Central Africa.

The city was founded as a trading settlement by the Duala people, whose name it bears, and grew rapidly under German colonial rule from 1884 to 1916 when it was called Kamerunstadt, before becoming the French-administered economic hub of the territory after the First World War transferred control to France under the League of Nations mandate.

The German colonial legacy is most visible along the riverfront where the few surviving German-era buildings — solid masonry structures with arched windows and deep verandas — stand alongside the concrete and corrugated-iron commercial buildings that make up the bulk of the inner-city fabric, a layered palimpsest of three colonial periods.

Douala's Bonamoussadi neighbourhood, built on a hillside east of the centre, gives an impression of the city's scale and its pattern of informal settlement, the corrugated roofs and crowded streets spreading as far as the eye can see from the hilltop with Mount Cameroon visible on clear days to the west.

The market districts in the city centre are overwhelming in their density and variety, offering everything from imported electronics to spices, used clothing and fresh food in an environment that is loud, colourful and entirely uncurated for tourists, giving an authentic experience of West African urban commerce.

Most visitors to Douala are here for business rather than tourism, and the city is best understood as Cameroon's main transport hub and commercial centre rather than a destination in its own right, though the riverfront, the markets and Bonamoussadi hill offer enough visual interest for a day or two.

From Douala the road south-west leads to the country's most dramatic scenery: the slopes of Mount Cameroon and the beach resorts of Kribi are both within a three-hour drive, making the city a practical — if not beautiful — base for exploring the south-west coast and the mountain that defines the region's geography.

The city experiences a tropical monsoon climate with high humidity year-round, making the period from November to February the most tolerable for visitors, when rainfall is lower and the temperature drops slightly from the year-round average of around 27 degrees Celsius that characterises the coastal lowlands.

As Cameroon's largest city and main port, Douala provides the authentic experience of a functioning West African commercial metropolis in a way that smaller Cameroonian towns cannot match.

The Duala people's historic riverfront settlements and the surviving German colonial architecture offer a historical dimension that adds depth to the city beyond its commercial function.

The city is the practical gateway to the south-west coast and Mount Cameroon for most travellers arriving by air, and its hotels, restaurants and transport connections make it a necessary stopover.
