Tassili n'Ajjer is a vast sandstone plateau in southeastern Algeria that contains one of the world's largest and most significant concentrations of prehistoric rock art, with images painted and engraved in natural rock shelters spanning approximately 10,000 years of human history.
The plateau's dramatic eroded landscape of natural arches, towers, and deep ravines was created by water erosion over millions of years during a period when the Sahara was wetter and the region held lakes, rivers, and vegetation, and the rock shelters that the erosion created became galleries of prehistoric art.
The rock art is classified into several distinct periods: the earliest 'Round Head' period from approximately 10,000 to 8,000 years ago depicts abstract human figures with large circular heads; the 'Bubalus' period shows large wild animals including buffalo, elephants, and giraffes in a naturalistic style; the 'Horse' period from approximately 3,000 to 2,000 years ago features chariots and domestic animals; and the 'Camel' period reflects the fully arid desert that arrived later.
UNESCO inscribed the site as a World Heritage cultural landscape in 1982, recognising both the geological processes that created the plateau and the cultural record of prehistoric human life in the Sahara — the rock art images of hippos in marshes, cattle herds, and human hands are simultaneously archaeological evidence and extraordinary works of art.
The Tin-Tazarift overhang shelters paintings so well preserved that traces of the original orange pigment are still visible, and the site is one of the most studied rock art locations in the world, with ongoing archaeological research continuing to refine the dating and interpretation of the images.
The plateau landscape itself functions as a visual archive of the Sahara's transformation from a wet to an arid environment, with horizontal geological strata visible in the cliff faces representing an ancient sea, a braided river system, and the arrival of desert sand in sequence.
The Sefar Petrified Forest on the plateau contains ancient dunes turned to stone over millions of years, and the nearby town of Taghit at the edge of the Erg Oriental desert features 120-metre sand dunes and a traditional fortified village set against a palmgrove oasis, demonstrating the range of the broader Tassili region.
The rock art of Tassili n'Ajjer includes some of the largest known prehistoric paintings, with some figures reaching more than three metres in height, and the 'Large Wild Fauna' style of the Bubalus period depicts elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and rhinoceroses in vivid naturalistic compositions that rank among the finest rock art in the world.
The Tassili rock art provides evidence of a Sahara that was dramatically different from today — the animal figures include hippos in marshland settings and crocodiles in river systems that no longer exist in the region, providing a Palaeolithic and Neolithic ecological record of considerable scientific importance.
The plateau's geological significance extends beyond the rock art: it is a major geological reserve with fossil-rich Devonian and Carboniferous limestone formations, and the area around Djanet contains unique ecosystems of juniper and Saharan montane flora that survive in the region's microclimate.
