A closer look
The name does not exaggerate: at sunrise and sunset the exposed cliffsides glow deep orange and red, the colour intensified by the absolute lack of vegetation on the bare rock faces, so that the whole formation appears to emit light rather than merely reflect it.
The dinosaur discoveries of Roy Chapman Andrews in the early 1920s — the first eggs ever found from a non-avian dinosaur — gave Bayanzag a place in the history of palaeontology that is as significant as the site's visual drama, and the dig sites are marked with interpretive signs along the base of the cliffs.
The surrounding Gobi landscape is a high-altitude desert at around 1,000 metres elevation, with extreme temperature swings between summer days exceeding 40 degrees Celsius and cold nights; this environment shapes everything from the sparse wildlife to the hardiness of the herder families who still graze camels and goats in the area.
The Flaming Cliffs area is remote — the last stretch of road from Dalanzadgad is rough — and this distance from Ulaanbaatar has kept it less crowded than more accessible Gobi sites, though this is changing as tourism infrastructure improves.
Walking along the base of the cliffs in the early morning, before the heat builds, you find small fragments of fossil bone embedded in the loose scree at the cliff base — not specimens to take, but tangible evidence of the ancient lakebed sediment that makes this area scientifically extraordinary.
The saxaul trees and dry scrub that cling to the wadi floors provide habitat for Gobi fox, desert warblers and the occasional long-legged eagle; the ecological contrast between the red cliffs and the grey-green vegetation is another visual layer that rewards patient observation.
The ger camps clustered near Bayanzag offer basic but comfortable accommodation and jeep excursions to the cliffs, and the experience of a Gobi night — a vast star-filled sky, the sound of wind on bare rock, and temperatures dropping rapidly after sunset — is as memorable as the cliffs themselves.
Beyond the famous fossil beds, the surrounding Bayanzag area is home to the Gobi's distinctive wildlife: the Saxaul sparrow, hawksbill turtle, the Mongolian ground squirrel and the Bactrian camel are all observable in the wadis around the cliffs, and the night sky from the ger camps is consistently cited by visitors as one of the darkest and most star-filled they have ever seen.
The geological story of the Flaming Cliffs is as compelling as the palaeontology: the red sandstone belongs to the Djadochta Formation, a sequence of ancient river and lake deposits laid down approximately 75 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period, and the vivid orange-red colouring comes from iron oxide mineralisation in the cement between the sand grains.
Local Gobi families operate small ger camps near the base of the cliffs, offering simple meals, camel rides across the surrounding desert and guided walks to lesser-known fossil sites that the larger tour operators bypass; these smaller operations provide the most authentic and least crowded experience of the area, particularly for visitors who want to witness sunrise from the cliff top.
The combination of world-class paleontological significance (first dinosaur eggs found) and extraordinary landscape photography conditions makes Bayanzag unique among Gobi sites.
The cliffs are at their most dramatic at sunrise and sunset, when the colour saturation is highest and the tourist jeeps have departed, rewarding those who camp nearby.
The site is part of the larger Gobi ecosystem, and a visit to Bayanzag can be combined with the Khongor Sand Dunes and the Gobi's unique wildlife for a comprehensive Gobi experience.
