Front Street, Philipsburg

Philipsburg's Front Street runs roughly north-south along the shore of Great Bay, the island's primary cruise harbour, and the contrast between the bright turquoise Caribbean sea and the pastel-painted shops, restaurants and casinos lining the boardwalk is one of the most recognisable street scenes in the Leeward Islands and the immediate first impression for the majority of the island's cruise visitors.

Great Bay itself is a long sweep of white sand that is unusually calm for an Atlantic-facing bay because the surrounding headlands and the shallow offshore shelf damp the ocean swell before it reaches the shore, making the water safe and comfortable for swimming and snorkelling even for visitors who are not strong ocean swimmers — a characteristic that distinguishes it sharply from the Atlantic-facing beaches on the island's east coast.

The Front Street commercial strip is built on a Dutch colonial town plan of straight streets and narrow blocks, and many of the original 18th and 19th century limestone and coral buildings have survived in altered form, their gabled façades now painted in vivid yellows, blues and pinks that define the Dutch Caribbean architectural aesthetic and give the street a visual coherence that is rare in a town that also functions as a major cruise port.

The beach facilities along Great Bay are well-developed with public showers, rentals for chairs and water-sports equipment, and boardwalks connecting the sand to the shops without the visitor having to cross a road — a degree of visitor infrastructure that has helped make this one of the highest-rated cruise port beach experiences in the southern Caribbean and a benchmark against which other island ports are often measured.

Back from the beach, the town has a modest but interesting cultural infrastructure: the Sint Maarten Museum documents the island's indigenous pre-Columbian past, its Dutch and French colonial periods, and its modern development as a dual-nation island, and the restored 18th-century courthouse on Front Street is an example of Dutch colonial civic architecture that predates the modern town by more than a century and provides a tangible physical connection to the island's early Dutch period.

The street runs to the southern end of the bay near the port authority facilities, where cruise ships moor alongside the waterfront and passengers walk directly onto Front Street, a degree of immediate integration between port and town that is unusual in the Caribbean and central to the distinctive character of the Philipsburg visitor experience, where the scale of the modern cruise ships and the intimate colonial street plan coexist in an oddly productive tension.
