Grandvalira

Grandvalira is not a single resort in the conventional sense but a ski domain stitched together from seven base villages — Pas de la Casa, Grau Roig, El Peretol, Soldeu, El Tarter, Canillo and Encamp — each with its own lift system and character, linked by pistes and roads that trace the Valira d'Orient river valley from the centre of Andorra eastwards to the French frontier.

The scale is the first thing that registers: over 200 kilometres of pistes served by more than 100 lifts, with the highest terrain reaching approximately 2,640 metres at the Pic Blanc sector, where the views on a clear day extend across the Pyrenean frontier into France and, on the southern aspect, down into Catalonia.

The resort has hosted World Cup alpine skiing events regularly, most notably in the Soldeu sector, which has produced technically demanding FIS downhill and super-G courses that have challenged the world's best racers — a point of pride for a small country that punches far above its weight in international winter sport.

Off-piste terrain is where Grandvalira earns its strongest reputation among serious skiers: the valley of Cortals above Grau Roig offers sustained backcountry-style descents with minimal grooming, and the resort has developed a network of controlled avalanche zones to allow guided access to steeper terrain safely.

Summer skiing is not available — the resort is winter-only — but the Grandvalira Golf Course opens in the warmer months on land reclaimed from former pistes, and the Soldeu and El Tarter villages have developed as year-round destinations with mountain biking parks and hiking trails that use the lift infrastructure.

The Pas de la Casa sector, closest to the border, sits at 2,100 metres and is the most exposed to northwesterly weather systems, which can deliver exceptional powder in January and February but also means the sector is frequently closed during storm cycles — a reminder that altitude is not a substitute for terrain protection in the Pyrenees.

For intermediates, the network of blue and red runs connecting the seven sectors is one of the most extensive linked systems in the Pyrenees, and a confident skier can cover considerable distance in a day; for beginners, the nursery slopes at Soldeu and El Tarter are purpose-built and well-separated from the race course traffic.

The resort operates a summer mountain biking park with lift access from Soldeu and El Tarter, hosting UCI World Cup events in the same venues that in winter serve alpine ski racing — a rare example of a single resort infrastructure serving both the winter and summer elite cycling calendars in the same country.
