A closer look

The Guelb er Richat — also known as the Richat Structure or Structure de Richat — is one of the most striking geological features on Earth, and its impact comes first from maps and satellite images: a near-perfect series of concentric rings, each 5 to 8 km wide, spread across the flat Hamada like a giant bullseye 50 km in diameter. Astronauts on the International Space Station have photographed it, and it appears in every geological textbook as an example of a circular geological formation of unusual scale and clarity. From the ground at ground level the effect is subtler, since the rings only resolve into distinct bands of pink, grey and yellow rock as you move around the dome.

The feature was first described in the 1930s by Western explorers and scientists and immediately attracted speculation that it was an impact crater from a meteorite — the concentric ring shape is a classic crater morphology and the landscape around it is flat enough that an impact origin seemed plausible. However, detailed geological surveys from the 1960s onward, including analysis of rock samples from the rings, have established conclusively that it is a geological dome formed by the differential erosion of a large structural basin, with the rings representing alternating bands of more and less resistant rock rather than impact-generated features.

The rocks at the surface are Precambrian in age, around 2 billion years old, and belong to a sequence of sedimentary and volcanic formations that were originally deposited in an ancient inland sea. The dome itself formed during a later phase of tectonic uplift, and the concentric pattern emerged as erosion stripped away the overlying layers and exposed the underlying structure. The age of the rocks — 2 billion years — means that the building blocks of the structure predate complex life on Earth by more than a billion years.

Getting to the Guelb er Richat requires a long drive from Ouadane across the featureless Hamada — there are no roads, only compass bearings and GPS tracks left by previous visitors. Once on the dome, the landscape is undulating stone desert, and the rings appear and disappear depending on your angle of approach. The outermost rings are the most accessible and can be explored on foot. The silence is absolute — no aircraft noise, no distant traffic, just the wind and the crunch of stone underfoot. The view at sunset, when the different rock bands take on different colours as the light fails, is one of the most memorable in the Sahara.
