Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay is a nearly perfect crescent of pale sand on the Atlantic-facing southeast coast of Antigua, stretching for roughly half a mile with a sweep of shoreline that has made it one of the most photographed beaches in the Caribbean. The water is the chief spectacle: a gradient from turquoise at the shore to deep blue in the channels between the offshore reef, and on a clear day the colour contrast is vivid enough to look artificial.

Unlike many famous Caribbean beaches, Half Moon Bay has retained a quality of relative seclusion despite its reputation. The beach is popular with visitors but has none of the large resort developments that line other Antiguan shores. A few small hotels and guesthouses occupy the hillsides behind the beach, and the surrounding coastline is low scrub and palm, giving the bay a backcountry feel that is increasingly rare on developed Caribbean islands.

The eastern end of the bay is rockier underfoot than the western half and tends to be less crowded, attracting those who want extra solitude. A shallow offshore reef creates calm swimming conditions on the Caribbean side of the bay, while the open Atlantic beyond the reef carries a heavier swell and is not recommended for swimming by anyone unfamiliar with open-ocean conditions.

Half Moon Bay is most popular during the winter months when the trade winds keep temperatures in the comfortable mid-20s Celsius and the water is clear and calm. The bay is fully exposed to the Atlantic, and during the summer months the trade winds can bring choppy conditions that reduce the water clarity and make swimming less pleasant, though the beach remains accessible.

The beach has minimal facilities — no large beach bars, no rental stalls, no changing rooms — and visitors are advised to bring water, snacks and sun protection. This lack of commercial development is part of the appeal: the bay feels like a place discovered rather than a destination constructed, and on quiet weekdays it is possible to have long stretches of sand almost entirely to yourself.

Getting to the beach requires a short walk from the car park area down a rough gravel track to the shore, and the path is steep in places. The effort is minimal and the reward is considerable: a beach of real beauty that rewards those who make the journey with the reward of a dramatic curved shoreline, powerful Atlantic water and a sense of genuine isolation from the developed tourist trail.
