Ilhéu das Rôlas

Ilhéu das Rôlas is a small islet lying off the southern tip of São Tomé Island, separated from the main island by Canal das Rôlas, and the crossing of this narrow channel by the local ferry is the primary access to the island for visitors departing from Ponta Baleia on the São Tomé coast.

The Equator passes through the islet, a fact that is its most notable geographic characteristic and is marked on the island by a monument or marker that visitors come to see, with the islet's small size making it possible to walk from one side to the other in a short time.

The islet's maximum elevation is 96 metres above sea level and its highest point provides views across Canal das Rôlas to the forested southern coast of São Tomé Island, with the volcanic silhouette of the island's interior visible to the north on clear days.

The population was recorded as 76 at the 2012 census, and the small community lives primarily from fishing and tourism serving the visitors who come for the day or stay at the island's small resort.

A lighthouse was built on the islet in 1929 with a focal height of 106 metres and a range of 12 nautical miles, and the lighthouse structure is visible from the surrounding sea and from the southern coast of São Tomé Island, contributing to the maritime character of the islet.

The island has a small resort offering accommodation for visitors who want to stay overnight, and the experience of an evening on the islet, with the sound of the channel currents and the stars over the Atlantic, is notably different from a day visit.

Access is only by ferry from Ponta Baleia on São Tomé Island, and the ferry crossing of Canal das Rôlas takes a short time in calm conditions, though the channel currents and weather conditions can affect the crossing, particularly in the afternoon when conditions are generally less favourable than in the morning.

The marine environment of Canal das Rôlas and the surrounding waters supports a variety of fish and invertebrate species, and snorkelling in the clear warm water of the channel provides an accessible marine experience for visitors to the islet.

The channel currents between the islet and the main island are strong enough to be visible from the shore, creating a natural division that reinforces the sense of a distinct and isolated place, and the evening ferry return crossing offers a different perspective on the channel and the southern coastline of São Tomé.

The islet is one of the few land areas in the world where the Equator passes through a small and clearly marked space, making it possible to stand on both sides of the line within a very short walk.

The combination of the Equator marker, the 1929 lighthouse, the small resort and the marine environment of Canal das Rôlas gives the islet a concentrated set of points of interest for a place of its small size.

The overnight stay on a small islet with minimal infrastructure, no sealed roads and limited artificial light provides a distinctive experience compared to other destinations in São Tomé and Príncipe.
