Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
JökulsárlónA glacial lagoon at the edge of Vatnajökull in southeast Iceland, with icebergs calving from the glacier into the lagoon and drifting out to sea across a narrow sand bar.

A closer look
Walking the shore near the lagoon mouth, the icebergs pass in slow rotation; their blue and white surfaces shift against the black volcanic sand of the beach.
On the lagoon side, the Vatnajökull glacier forms a continuous wall in the distance; small boats move slowly between the larger floes.
On the Diamond Beach side, fragments of ice sit on the black sand; the sound of the surf mixes with the slow clink of melting ice.
It is the largest glacial lake in Iceland and one of the most visited natural sites in the southeast.
Icebergs calve directly from the glacier into the lagoon; the shapes change from hour to hour.
The adjacent Diamond Beach is a short walk across the road and gives a contrasting black-sand setting for grounded ice.

- Late June to mid-October for open access, with mid-October offering the first northern lights of the season on clear nights. Winter has short daylight and ice on the access roads.
Boat tours generally close in the heart of winter; verify operator schedules.
