A closer look
The approach to Kaindy Lake involves a gradual ascent through increasingly dramatic alpine terrain, transitioning from the populated Almaty region foothills into a landscape of high meadow and bare limestone cliff that becomes progressively more remote and increasingly beautiful as the trail climbs, until the tree line gives way entirely to rock and the path opens onto a blue-green lake set in a steep bowl of grey limestone.
The most memorable feature of the lake is the forest that drowned in the 1911 earthquake-triggered landslide that created the lake basin: the dead spruce trees still stand in and above the water, their bare grey trunks and broken branches rising several metres above the surface and creating an eerie geometric pattern that is entirely natural yet appears unmistakably designed, a quality that has made the lake a repeated subject for landscape photography.
Water clarity in the lake is exceptional, and the submerged tree trunks are visible to a depth of many metres as the light penetrates the turquoise water and illuminates the branching structure below the surface, creating an effect that combines the precision of a botanical illustration with the scale of a natural forest and the strangeness of a flooded ruin.
The lake sits at an elevation that places it well above the tree line, and the surrounding slopes are covered in alpine meadow during the summer months when the wildflower display includes species from both Central Asian and Siberian floristic zones, reflecting the transitional position of the Tian Shan range between these two major biogeographic regions.
Reflection plays a significant role in the visual experience of Kaindy: on calm mornings the dead trees and the limestone walls are mirrored perfectly in the still water, and the resulting symmetry between the upright and inverted landscape creates an image of almost painterly quality that visitors consistently rank as the most striking aspect of their visit.
The lake is accessible on a long day-hike from the Saty village area or as part of a multi-day trekking route in the higher Tian Shan, and the walking is straightforward though the altitude makes itself felt in reduced stamina for those not acclimatised to elevations above 2,000 metres, a physical reminder of the mountain environment.
Fishing in the lake is permitted and rainbow trout have been introduced, though the cold water and relatively low productivity of the alpine environment means that catch rates are modest and the interest is primarily for those who enjoy the meditative experience of alpine fly fishing in an extraordinary setting rather than for sports fishing records.
The drowned forest of Kaindy is a singular natural phenomenon with no close parallel at other accessible alpine lakes in Central Asia.
The combination of turquoise water, submerged dead trees and dramatic limestone walls creates an immersive landscape that rewards both photography and direct experience.
The site offers a genuine wilderness experience accessible to day visitors with moderate hiking fitness.
Before you go
Current details checked July 2026
- Best season
- June through September offers the most reliable trail conditions and the richest wildflower display; early season snow may block the higher passes.
Spring snowmelt makes for difficult trail conditions in May; by late September the weather becomes unpredictable at altitude.
Editorial guidance - Before you go 1
- The trail is approximately 6–8 km each way from the road-head and involves significant altitude gain; start early to allow a full day.Editorial guidance
- Before you go 2
- Bring sun protection and layers: the high altitude sun is intense while the air temperature at the lake can be cool even in midsummer.Editorial guidance
- Before you go 3
- Do not attempt the trail after heavy rain: the limestone terrain creates slippery conditions and creek crossings can become dangerous.Editorial guidance

Practical notes
Note 1
Kaindy Lake is located in the Tian Shan mountains of the Almaty Region, approximately 130 km southeast of Almaty near the village of Saty.
Note 2
The lake was formed in 1911 when a landslide triggered by an earthquake blocked the Kaindy River valley.
Note 3
The dead spruce trees visible above and below the water are the drowned remains of the original forest that existed in the valley before the landslide.
