A closer look

Kenting National Park occupies the entire Hengchun Peninsula at Taiwan's southern tip, an area of 33,269 hectares established as Taiwan's first national park in 1984. The park takes its name from the Mandarin translation of "Kenting," the name given by early Han settlers to the area's large, straight-leaved terminalia trees (Keting or "expansive hall" trees), a name that appears on Dutch-era maps of the island from the seventeenth century.

The peninsula experiences a tropical monsoon climate with average annual temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius and annual precipitation of approximately 2,000 millimetres, the majority falling between May and October. Winter months from October to March are dominated by the northeast monsoon bringing drier and cooler air from mainland China across the Taiwan Strait, while the summer months from June to August bring the southwest monsoon, higher humidity and frequent afternoon thunderstorms that are part of the Plum Rain Season.

The coastal landscape is dominated by coral reef platforms formed from uplifted reef limestone that extends along most of the peninsula's ocean-facing shore. The most accessible and dramatic section runs from Oluanpi in the south to the long sweep of Xiaowan Beach in the northwest, with coral heads visible in the shallows at low tide. The Eluanbi at the peninsula's southernmost point is known for its coral reef diversity, particularly brain coral and table coral formations, and for the Eluanbi Lighthouse built by the Qing dynasty in 1883 to warn ships of the dangerous shoals at the meeting point of the Taiwan Strait and the Pacific Ocean.

The Cape (Eluanbi) itself is one of the most historically significant coastal sites in East Asia: the rocky point where the Taiwan Strait meets the open Pacific has claimed many ships over the centuries, and the lighthouse's role in reducing wrecks was significant enough that it became a point of diplomatic tension during the Sino-French War of 1884 to 1885 when French forces temporarily occupied the cape and damaged the original lighthouse.

The park's interior consists of three distinct geological formations: the coral reef limestone of the coastal margins, the gravel and alluvial fan deposits of the Shanjan and Fangliao River systems, and the basaltic flows of the Little Sand Island in the southwest. The combination supports a mosaic of grassland, scrubland and broadleaf evergreen forest communities with different indicator species: the Formosan sika deer is found in the open grassland areas, while the Formosan landlocked salmon inhabits the cool, clear streams of the upper watersheds.

The grassland ecosystems on the peninsula's eastern slope, above the coastal cliffs, are the preferred habitat of the endemic Formosan Reeves's macaque and provide critical wintering ground for migratory raptors and passerines that cross the Taiwan Strait from mainland Asia each autumn. The annual Taiwan bird migration peaks in October and November and draws birdwatchers to the park's elevated grassland observation points.

Visitor facilities include the Kenting Youth Activity Centre near Xiaowan Beach, the Nanliao seaside camping area and several marked coastal and forest trails. The Coastal Trail runs for 17 kilometres along the most dramatic section of the western reef coastline, with access points at major scenic spots. The park is heavily visited from June to August when Taiwanese school holidays bring domestic tourists in large numbers, making the summer period far more crowded than the shoulder seasons.

Taiwan's oldest national park and its most accessible tropical coastal environment, with coral reefs, basalt coves and grassland accessible within a single day trip from any base on the peninsula.

The Eluanbi Cape and its lighthouse represent a historically significant site at the exact point where the Taiwan Strait meets the Pacific Ocean.

The combination of coral reef marine life, bird migration corridors and Formosan sika deer in one compact geographical unit is unique among Taiwan's protected areas.

Before you go

Current details checked July 2026

Best season
October to March for the driest and most stable weather and bird migration season; June to August for the warmest water and peak beach season but heaviest crowds.

The northeast monsoon from November to March creates ideal conditions for hiking the Coastal Trail; summer afternoon thunderstorms are frequent and can interrupt outdoor plans.

Editorial guidance
Before you go 1
Rent a scooter or car in Hengchun town; public transport on the peninsula is limited and infrequent.Editorial guidance
Before you go 2
The summer peak (June to August) brings large domestic crowds; booking accommodation in advance is essential for the July-August window.Editorial guidance
Before you go 3
Bring reef-safe sunscreen and water shoes; the coral platforms are sharp and the sun is intense even on overcast days.Editorial guidance

Practical notes

Note 1

Kenting National Park was established on 1 January 1984 as Taiwan's first national park.

Note 2

The park covers 33,269 hectares on the Hengchun Peninsula; the marine jurisdiction extends an additional 3,720 hectares of coral reef habitat.

Note 3

The Eluanbi Lighthouse was completed in 1883 during the Qing dynasty; it was damaged in the Sino-French War of 1884-1885 and rebuilt.
