Lake Bled

Bledsko jezero

A glacial Alpine lake in Upper Carniola with Slovenia's only natural island, a Baroque island church and a medieval cliff-top castle — one of the most recognisable images in Central Europe.

A closer look

The first view of Lake Bled from the south shore is almost theatrical: the island church, its baroque bell tower rising above a cluster of lime trees, the cliff-top castle behind, and forested mountains closing the frame. The effect has been described so many times that it almost resists belief, yet the reality is equal to the photograph. The lake is a classic glacial cirques, formed during the last Ice Age when the Bohinj glacier carved out the basin. The island itself is the only natural island in Slovenia, a rare feature in any European lake, and its isolation gives the impression of something sculpted rather than built.

The island church, the Church of the Assumption, dates from the 17th century but almost certainly stands on the site of an older pilgrimage church from the 9th century. Its interior is decorated with Baroque frescoes and a gilded altar, and the 99 steps that lead up from the dock are climbed by visitors who stop halfway to ring the church bell — a tradition that is said to grant a wish or bring a marriage. The act of rowing out to the island in a flat-bottomed pletna boat, a tradition that dates at least to the 18th century, is as much a part of the experience as the church itself. The boatmen who crew these boats are traditionally from Bled's own rowing families, and the pletna has been registered as part of Slovenia's intangible cultural heritage.

The medieval Bled Castle, perched on a 130-metre cliff above the lake, was built in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 17th, its current appearance a composite of medieval fortifications and later Renaissance remodeling. From the upper bailey there is a wide view across the lake to the mountains, and the castle houses a museum of regional history and a smithy that still operates as it would have centuries ago. Bled itself, the small town on the lake shore, grew from a medieval settlement into a resort in the 19th century and became a favourite destination of the Yugoslav political elite before opening to international tourism after independence in 1991. The lake is also known for its mild climate; Bled has been designated as a climatic health resort, and the lake water can reach 25 degrees Celsius in summer, making it warm enough for swimming by Central European standards. The area's food culture is anchored by Bled cream, a layered dessert of vanilla custard, whipped cream and caramelised hazelnuts that has been made in Bled since the 1950s and is served at almost every café around the lake.

Slovenia's only natural lake island, with a church that is a living pilgrimage site.

A rare combination of natural glacial landscape, medieval fortification and living resort tradition.

The pletna boat tradition and Bled cream give the place an intangible cultural texture that most scenic lakes lack.
