Lake Hévíz is the world's second-largest natural thermal lake and the largest in Europe, a roughly oval body of warm mineral-rich water in the town of Hévíz in western Hungary, approximately eight kilometres from Lake Balaton. The lake is unusual in being fed by a powerful underground spring that pushes warm water upward at a rate of approximately 80 litres per second, creating a constant gentle circulation that keeps the lake's temperature relatively stable and prevents stagnation even in the heat of a Hungarian summer, with the water temperature varying between approximately 23 to 25 degrees Celsius in summer and dropping to around 18 to 20 degrees in spring and autumn depending on the season and weather conditions.
The physical sensation of bathing in Lake Hévíz is unlike that of a conventional swimming pool: the water has a distinctly oily quality from its high mineral content, and bathers describe a feeling of being simultaneously buoyed and massaged by the spring circulation as they float in the reed-fringed lake surrounded by overgrown banks and woodland. The lake supports a rich ecosystem, with a surface layer warmed by the sun hosting water lilies and aquatic plants, and a cooler bottom layer maintained at around 12 degrees Celsius by groundwater inflow, creating a thermal stratification that sustains distinct biological communities in a relatively small body of water and giving the lake a variety of character depending on where and at what depth a visitor chooses to float.

The therapeutic programme at Hévíz draws on the lake's mineral content, its thermal properties, and in some treatments the peat layer at the lake bottom, which has been accumulating for millennia and is also believed to have anti-inflammatory properties when applied in compresses or baths, making the lake itself and the treatments derived from it part of a single integrated therapeutic tradition.
The town of Hévíz has organised its development around the lake, with the main bathing establishment occupying the eastern bank and a ring of hotels and spa facilities facing the water across a park-like setting of tree-lined walks and ornamental gardens that are at their most colourful in late spring and early autumn. The lake itself is accessible from the bathing establishment via wooden walkways that extend over the water, allowing visitors to enter the lake from different points and to sit or float in the reed beds at the lake's edges where the warmest water is typically found, particularly in the early morning when the spring circulation is most active and the surface mist rises from the warmer water into the cool morning air.
The bathing season at Hévíz runs from early spring to late autumn, with the peak season from May to September when the lake temperature is warmest and the surrounding park is at its most colourful with rhododendrons and azaleas in bloom, and the town fills with visitors who come primarily for the therapeutic bathing rather than for conventional sightseeing, giving the town a different character from the more overtly touristic destinations on Lake Balaton to the south. Summer thunderstorms are a regular feature of the afternoon weather pattern in this part of Hungary, and visitors should be prepared for sudden heavy rain that can interrupt bathing; spring visits offer the advantage of warm water, cooler air and fewer people, and autumn brings a final window of warm water andchanging leaf colours in the surrounding park.
It is one of the largest and most powerful natural thermal lakes in the world, and the bathing experience — warm, mineral-rich water in a natural lake surrounded by woodland and reed beds — is unlike any artificial spa facility.
The lake has been the subject of serious medical research into its therapeutic properties, and the associated spa and treatment facilities have a century-long track record of treating musculoskeletal conditions.
The surrounding park and the town of Hévíz have developed specifically around the lake in a way that preserves the natural character of the water body and its immediate environment.
