Lalomanu Beach

Lalomanu is the name that appears most often when travellers describe the best beach in Samoa, and the reputation is well earned. A broad crescent of pale sand curves along the southeast coast of Upolu, with reef-bounded water that is turquoise close to shore and deeper blue further out. Palm trees line the beach in the traditional way, and small resorts and fales sit immediately behind the sand, their roofs visible from the water. The beach is wide enough that even on a busy day there is space to find solitude, and the slope into the water is gentle, making it safe for children. At the far eastern end a rocky point creates a small cove that is particularly sheltered and popular with snorkellers.

From the elevated section near the Sinalei Resort, the view along the full crescent of sand is one of the most complete coastal vistas in Samoa. On calm mornings the water becomes a mirror reflecting the sky and the palms, and the reef patterns beneath the surface are visible in detail. On clear days you can see American Samoa on the horizon. The beach is well suited to snorkelling: there are patches of coral close enough to reach from shore, and the reef edge about two hundred metres out holds a greater variety of fish. Boat trips from the beach visit outer reef spots. Currents can be strong near the reef edge and wading out is not straightforward because of the coral substrate.

The village of Lalomanu sits immediately behind the beach and small shops sell woven mats, coconut oil and food. The island interior rises steeply behind the coast road, and within a short drive the forested slopes lead to waterfalls and walking tracks. Lalomanu works equally as a place to do nothing and as a base for exploring the southern coast of Upolu. The beach is well known enough to appear in most Pacific travel guides and on regional best-beach lists, and its near-universal recommendation reflects something genuine rather than mere familiarity. The setting on a promontory means the sea views extend in two directions, giving mornings and evenings different characters depending on the light.

Most visitors stay in one of the small beach resorts that line the back of the sand, ranging from simple fales to air-conditioned hotel rooms. The Sinalei Beach Resort is among the best known and occupies a prime section of the beachfront. The resorts manage their sections of the beach and provide kayaks and snorkelling equipment to guests. Independent visitors are also welcome and can use the beach freely. The whole stretch from the rocks at the eastern end to the point at the western end is roughly two kilometres, and it is possible to walk the full length at low tide when the sand is firm. Like all beach destinations in Samoa, Lalomanu is best experienced early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the midday heat and the tour groups have not yet arrived.

Routinely cited as one of the finest beaches in the Pacific, with broad pale sand, clear reef-protected water and a setting framed by palms and volcanic hills.
