A closer look

The Lemaire Channel is one of the most photographed and most celebrated passages in all of Antarctica, a narrow corridor of water that separates the Antarctic Peninsula from the mainland to its west. The channel is approximately 11 kilometres long and at its narrowest point is only about 1.6 kilometres wide, which means that ships sailing through it are surrounded on both sides by steep mountain walls that rise straight from the waterline to heights of 1,000 metres or more, creating an effect that resembles sailing through a mountain tunnel with open sky at both ends.

The mountain scenery is consistently spectacular along the entire length of the channel. The peaks are sharp and alpine in character, carved by glacial action into ridges and faces that would be impressive anywhere but seem almost impossibly dramatic here at the bottom of the world where the raw power of geological processes is on constant display. The higher slopes are glaciated, with glaciers descending in places to terminate in ice cliffs that drop directly into the sea, and in other places pulling back to reveal bare dark rock that has been exposed only recently by ice retreat.

The water of the channel is typically calm and still, often forming a near-perfect mirror that reflects the mountain walls in reverse, doubling the visual impact of the scenery and creating photographic opportunities that are among the finest available anywhere on the planet. Icebergs of various sizes drift slowly through the channel, ranging from small growlers to large tabular ice islands that require careful navigation to avoid. The combination of still water, reflected mountains, and drifting ice creates a landscape that feels almost staged in its perfection.

Wildlife in the channel itself is less concentrated than at some landing sites, but the surrounding waters are important feeding grounds for humpback whales that pass through during their seasonal movements. Minke whales are more resident, remaining in the region through the summer months to feed on the abundant krill that swarm in the cold productive waters. Crabeater seals are commonly seen on the floating ice, their pale bodies difficult to distinguish from the surrounding ice until they move.

Navigating the Lemaire Channel is one of the signature experiences of an Antarctic expedition cruise. The passage is only attempted when ice conditions and weather permit, and the approach from the north requires careful navigation around Prospect Point and a careful transit through the narrowest section. Ships typically enter from the north and exit to the south, giving passengers an extended view of the full length of the channel as the ship makes its way through. The combination of visual drama, navigational challenge, and the sense of privilege at being allowed into such a remote and beautiful space makes the Lemaire Channel transit one of the most anticipated moments of any Antarctic voyage.

The mountain-and-water corridor effect of the Lemaire Channel creates one of the most dramatic and visually concentrated wilderness experiences available in Antarctica.

The mirror-calm water on still days produces perfect reflections that photograph exceptionally well, making this a must-see for photography enthusiasts.
