A closer look

The blowholes are distributed along a coastal cliff of dark basalt, and the sound is the first thing you register from the car park: a rhythmic, percussive huffing that builds to a sharp jetting sound as each wave forces air and water through the narrow vents in the rock.

Standing at the edge of the cliff you watch the ocean swell approach from the south, fill a long lava-tube fissure, and then erupt through a blowhole with a sound like a drawn breath followed by a cough — on a large swell the spray reaches well above the cliff rim and the whole mechanism is visible from top to bottom.

The cliff top is bare volcanic rock with minimal shade, and the spray drift carries enough salt moisture to keep the rocks slick; the footing near the edge requires care, particularly on wet days when the surface becomes as slippery as ice.

Photographing the blowholes requires patience: the eruption cycle varies with the swell period, and the best shots come when a larger wave set arrives after several smaller ones, building pressure in the fissure before the big burst; a long lens compresses the distance and makes the geysers look taller than they are in reality.

Local legend identifies the blowholes with Mapu'a Vaea, a mythological figure who is said to have thrown his staff into the rock and created the vents, and this oral tradition gives the site a cultural dimension that a purely geological description would miss.

The site is less developed for tourism than comparable blowholes in Iceland or Hawaii, which means there are no guardrails, no visitor centre and no admission fee — the raw power of the ocean is presented without intermediary, and this directness is part of what makes it memorable.

A walk along the clifftop path reveals a dozen or more individual blowholes, each with its own character: some produce a low whisper, others a sharp crack, and one large fissure near the western end throws a wide fan of spray that can soak visitors standing several metres back on a big swell day.

The lava tubes that feed the blowholes were formed during a volcanic eruption that created Tongatapu's southern coastline, and the same geological event produced the flat coral-limestone plateau that characterises much of the island's interior.

When the swell is very large, typically during a southern ocean storm, some of the blowholes produce a sound that can be heard from several hundred metres inland, a deep percussive boom that residents of the nearby villages say signals that a significant swell is arriving.

The spray from the larger blowholes on a big-swell day creates a persistent mist that drifts inland and settles on vegetation, leaving a fine coating of salt that local farmers once collected as a commodity for preserving fish and meat.

The combination of a 7-kilometre stretch of active lava-tube blowholes with no tourist infrastructure makes this one of the most powerful coastal spectacles in the Pacific with minimal human mediation.

The site has a clear mythological grounding in Tongan oral tradition, giving it cultural context that purely geological interest cannot provide.

Photographing the eruption timing is a rewarding challenge for visitors interested in natural-event photography.
