Mele Cascades

The Mele Cascades consist of a series of waterfalls descending through dense tropical forest in the Mele Valley, approximately 8 kilometres inland from Port Vila, with a series of natural pools connected by small rapids and cascades that make the site equally suitable for swimming, photography, and gentle exploration along the marked walking tracks that follow the watercourse.

Access to the upper tiers of the falls involves a walk through forest that is notably cooler than the coastal approach, with the tree canopy filtering direct sunlight and the sound of water providing a constant ambient score that intensifies as you move upstream toward the higher pools. The lowest pool is the most developed and most visited, with the widest sandy edge and the easiest access from the car park.

The water flow at Mele Cascades varies substantially with season, running at full strength during and immediately after the wet season from December to April, when the multiple tiers are all active and the pools are deep enough for swimming. In the dry season from May to October, some of the upper tiers may reduce to thin trickles while the main lower pool retains enough water for a refreshing swim.

The surrounding Mele Valley supports a variety of tropical plant life including ferns, palms, and flowering hibiscus that provide visual interest throughout the year, and the forest edges are a reliable habitat for introduced and endemic bird species that can be spotted from the walking tracks.

For visitors based in Port Vila, Mele Cascades provides a convenient half-day excursion that combines natural scenery with minimal travel time, making it a popular choice for cruise ship passengers with limited time and for families with children who can manage the moderate walking track without difficulty.

The Mele Cascades area is also home to a small botanical garden maintained by the local community, where traditional Ni-Vanuatu food plants are labelled with their Bislama and scientific names, providing an educational complement to the purely recreational experience of the waterfall pools.

The forest surrounding the cascades is also home to the igaeb or fruit bat, a native species that emerges at dusk and can be observed flying overhead as the afternoon light fades over the Mele Valley, providing an additional wildlife dimension to the visit beyond the waterfall pools themselves.

Photographers find the cascades most compelling in the early morning when the side-lighting from the east reveals the texture of the water as it drops over each tier, with the deep green of the surrounding vegetation providing strong contrast against the white water and grey volcanic rock.

The most accessible waterfall on Efate, reachable within 30 minutes from Port Vila and requiring minimal physical demands beyond a short forest walk.
