Mileștii Mici Wine Cellar

The entrance to Mileștii Mici descends via a wide vehicle tunnel into a subterranean city that was quarried from limestone from the 15th century onwards, leaving a maze of galleries that today store more than two million bottles of wine at a constant temperature of 12–14°C year-round, maintained by the thermal mass of the surrounding limestone rather than mechanical refrigeration.

The Guinness World Record for the largest wine cellar in the world by total gallery length was awarded in 2005 and remains current as of 2026; the official record notes 200 km of underground galleries, though ongoing limestone quarrying has extended the total length beyond this figure, making the claim if anything conservative. The name Mileștii Mici appears on official Moldovan tourism itineraries as a destination in its own right.

The oldest bottles in the collection date back to 1969, and a section of the cellar known as the Presidential Collection holds wines presented to visiting heads of state including bottles from France, Italy and Georgia; a curated tasting of these reserve wines is the centrepiece of the standard tourist visit and must be booked separately from the standard tour.

The galleries are named after the wine-producing countries whose vintages they store: France, Italy, Spain, Germany and others each have a named section, and the labels on the oldest bottles are documented in a wine archive that is maintained by the estate's full-time sommelier team, making the collection one of the most thoroughly catalogued national wine collections in Eastern Europe.

Trolley tours through the illuminated galleries take approximately one hour and pass through sections where the ceiling is low enough to require stooping, while others are cathedral-vast with vaulted limestone ceilings supported by massive carved pillars left behind when the limestone was quarried, creating an almost subterranean urban landscape of stone and wine.

The wine itself is produced from estate-grown grapes in the nearby Codru region, Moldova's most important wine-producing area; Mileștii Mici is one of the largest wine producers in the country and its brands are widely available in export markets in Eastern Europe and beyond, making the cellar visit a chance to see the source behind the wine sold internationally.

The estate also produces sparkling wine by the traditional Champagne method and has won international awards for its red Cabernet Sauvignon and its late-harvest white wines, which are stored in a separate cooler section of the cellar at a lower temperature than the still wines, providing an additional tasting experience within the same underground complex.

The Guinness World Record for the largest wine cellar in the world makes Mileștii Mici a globally unique destination — no other wine cellar has both the total gallery length and the bottle count of this site.

The underground setting at a constant 12–14°C offers a dramatic contrast to Moldova's above-ground landscape, and the illuminated galleries are visually striking.
