A closer look

Milky Way Lake is a geological accident that became a swimming hole. It sits in a hollow between limestone karst hills in the Rock Islands, completely cut off from the sea, its water a strange layered system: fresh rainwater floats on top of older marine water that was trapped when the land rose or the sea fell, and a sharp thermocline separates the two. The upper layer is what gives the lake its name. When you wade in or kick underwater, the fine calcium carbonate particles suspended in the water turn the surface to opaque milky turquoise, a colour that sounds beautiful but looks more like diluted paint — an unsettling, uncanny milky way. The effect takes perhaps ten minutes to settle after you stop moving, and the water becomes clear again until the next disturbance.

The lake is a scientific site of some interest. The trapped marine water below the thermocline is estimated to have been isolated from the open ocean for approximately 12,000 years, since the end of the last glacial maximum when sea level was lower. The marine organisms trapped in the lower layer have been evolving in isolation since then, and the lake has been studied by Japanese researchers from the 1930s onward. Palauan oral traditions contain references to the lake's unusual character and a traditional name that may reflect ancient understanding of its formation, though much of this knowledge is fragmentary today.

Snorkeling the thermocline is the central experience. You descend through the milky upper layer — where you can see the bottom maybe a metre below — and at roughly three to five metres depth hit the cold clear marine layer below, where visibility opens up dramatically and the shapes of ancient marine organisms become visible. The sensation of swimming through that milky cloud and breaking into cold clear water is unlike any open-ocean or reef experience. The lake is not visually spectacular in the way that a coral reef is — there are no vivid coral formations or large schools of fish — but the experience of the water itself, the milky suspension and the thermocline dive, is genuinely singular.

The lake is typically accessed as part of a Rock Islands boat tour, which includes it in a circuit of highlights that may also visit Jellyfish Lake, a snorkel site and a beach for lunch. There is no formal dock or boardwalk — you step from the boat into waist-deep water at a rocky landing — and there is no visitor infrastructure beyond what your boat crew brings. The experience is short, perhaps thirty minutes in the water, and requires no special equipment beyond a snorkel mask. It is one of those places that is best understood by entering it rather than observing from the shore.

The milky calcium carbonate suspension gives the lake a visual character found nowhere else on earth — an effect that sounds subtle but creates a genuinely alien swimming experience.

The thermocline between the isolated freshwater lens and the ancient trapped marine water below supports an evolutionarily isolated marine community estimated to be 12,000 years old.

Palau's Rock Islands geology creates this and other unique marine lakes; Milky Way Lake is one of several restricted marine lakes in the cluster studied for their isolated ecosystems.
