A closer look
Møns Klint rises to 128 metres above the Baltic Sea on the eastern coast of the island of Møn, forming one of the most dramatic pieces of coastal scenery in Denmark, with seven principal white chalk cliffs extending approximately seven kilometres along the coastline and creating a landscape unlike anything else in the country, a place where the land simply ends in a vertical wall of brilliant white against the dark sea.
The white chalk walls are a startling contrast against the dark waters of the Baltic Sea below, and on a clear day the light reflected off the chalk makes the cliffs appear to glow even on overcast days, while at sunrise and sunset the effect is intensified, with the white chalk turning pink and gold against the grey-blue sea, creating a constantly shifting palette of colour that rewards repeated visits at different times of day.
The southernmost section of the cliff is known as Dronningestolen—the Queen's Chair—a name derived from a local legend that Queen Margrethe I once sheltered under the overhang during a storm, and it is the most photographed and most visited section of the cliffs, accessible by a steep path from the cliff-top car park, where visitors emerge from the forest to a sudden and breathtaking view of the white cliff face rising above the sea.
The chalk cliffs at Møns Klint are part of a larger geological formation running through northern Europe from Ireland to the Baltic, deposited during the Late Cretaceous approximately 70 million years ago when the area lay beneath a shallow sea teeming with marine plankton whose microscopic shells formed the chalk sediment that would eventually be pushed up by tectonic forces and carved into the dramatic landscape we see today.
The chalk itself is composed of coccolithophore shells that accumulated on the seabed over millions of years, and the cliffs were shaped into their current dramatic form by glacial activity during the ice ages, with erosion continuing today and chunks of chalk occasionally falling from the cliff face onto the beach below, a process that maintains the cliffs' stark white appearance but also means that the landscape is slowly but continuously changing.
The area became a nature reserve in 2002 and the chalk geology supports a unique ecosystem, with specialised plants adapted to the bare chalk exposures including several orchid species and unusual grasses, and butterflies that live only on chalk grassland, making the site of ecological as well as geological and scenic significance and providing a reason for nature enthusiasts to visit beyond the dramatic views.
The beach below the cliffs is covered in chalk rubble, flint pebbles and dark sand, and the contrast between the brilliant white cliff faces and the dark beach and sea below creates an almost surreal visual landscape that photographers and painters have been drawn to for generations, and walking along the beach at the foot of the cliffs gives a sense of scale that is impossible to appreciate from the cliff top.
The chalk cliffs are among the most visually dramatic natural features in Denmark and one of the most photographed landscapes in the country.
The geological history of the chalk, deposited 70 million years ago and shaped by ice age glaciers, makes the site significant for understanding the geological history of northern Europe.
The surrounding nature reserve protects one of Denmark's most important habitats for rare plants and butterflies, making it of ecological as well as scenic value.

- June to September offers the warmest weather and the clearest views; the spring wildflower season (May) is also excellent for the chalk grassland flowers.
The chalk wildflowers bloom most profusely in May and early June; by midsummer the grass has dried and the landscape becomes more austere.
