A closer look
Mount Karthala rises from the southern tip of Grande Comore as a broad, gently sloped shield built entirely from successive lava flows, its summit defined not by a single peak but by a large volcanic caldera. From the air the island reads as a dark green cone, the surrounding lower slopes covered in forest that gives way to farmland and then to the bare volcanic rock near the top. The summit caldera itself changes shape after each eruption; the crater floor may hold temporary water or volcanic debris rather than a persistent lake.
The climb to the summit from the western side takes two to three days for a round trip on foot, moving through zones that shift from dense forest through montane scrub to open volcanic terrain. The lower slopes are cultivated withytaro, banana, and ylang-ylang, the cash crops of the island. Above the tree line the landscape becomes lunar, composed of loose basalt rubble, solidified lava flows, and areas of geothermal activity where the ground hisses with escaping gas. The caldera rim offers views across the entire island and, on clear mornings, of the neighbouring islands of Mohéli and Anjouan on the horizon.
Karthala is one of the most active volcanoes in the Indian Ocean basin. The eruption of April 2005 displaced approximately 10,000 residents with little warning, and the summit area was covered in ash that changed the colour of the landscape for months afterward. Prior to that, the most recent significant eruption was in 1991, and smaller episodes of increased seismic and fumarolic activity have been recorded several times since. The geological record preserved in the lava flows tells a story of a hotspot volcano that has been building the island layer by layer for hundreds of thousands of years.
The endemic flora of Karthala's upper slopes has been studied by botanists who have identified several plant species found nowhere else on Earth. The upper volcanic zone supports a specialised community of species adapted to the nutrient-poor soils, high altitude, and ongoing volcanic disturbance. The forest below acts as a water catchment that feeds springs and streams used by communities on the lower slopes. In this sense Karthala is not merely a scenic backdrop but a functional part of the island ecosystem, providing both the water and the soil that sustain the communities climbing its flanks.
The experience of standing on the caldera rim is difficult to prepare for. The view down into the crater is not a single dramatic drop but a gradual descent across a landscape of ash, rubble, and geothermal features that shift with each eruptive episode. On clear evenings the light over the Mozambique Channel to the west catches the caldera walls in a way that makes the scale of the feature apparent. The mountain generates its own weather; cloud can form inside the caldera within minutes of a clear spell, reducing visibility to a few metres and making navigation on the upper slopes hazardous. Climbers who have reached the summit report that the environment changes character completely depending on whether the caldera is clear, misted, or venting — and that all three states can occur within a single morning.
Karthala is the highest point in the Comoros and one of the most active volcanoes in the Indian Ocean; its summit lake and lava fields are accessible by trek.
The volcano's geological record preserves the entire constructive history of Grande Comore, with lava flows from different periods exposed along the caldera walls.
The endemic plant communities of the upper slopes represent a unique scientific resource found nowhere else in the world.
