A closer look

Ny-Ålesund is a small cluster of brightly coloured research buildings on the shore of Kongsfjorden, and it is — remarkably — the world's northernmost permanent settlement, a title it holds despite having no indigenous population and no economic activity beyond science, with the entire purpose of the community being the production of knowledge about the Arctic and the global systems it drives.

The settlement was established in 1916 as a coal-mining town by the same company that founded Longyearbyen, and the first mine shaft was driven into the hillside within a year of the founding, but the last mine here closed in 1962 and Norway subsequently converted the abandoned town into a shared-international research facility, a model that has no parallel in the polar world for its longevity and the depth of international cooperation it represents.

Today eleven nations maintain their own stations here — Norway, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, India, China, South Korea, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States — and each national station has its own building or cluster of buildings, its own flag, and its own research programme, while the Norwegian Polar Institute coordinates the site and manages the shared infrastructure including the pier, power plant, freshwater supply, communications system, and the airstrip.

The research programme covers atmospheric science, oceanography, glaciology, geology, biology, and permafrost studies, and scientists here are studying some of the most consequential questions in modern Earth science — how fast the Arctic ice sheet is retreating, how the ocean circulation that moderates European climate is changing, and what the permafrost beneath the tundra is doing as temperatures rise.

Historical resonance adds an extraordinary layer to the place: in May 1926, Roald Amundsen's airship Norge departed from Ny-Ålesund and reached the North Pole, the first certified expedition to do so, claiming the pole for Norway and demonstrating that the airship had solved the problem of reaching the top of the world, and a brass cylinder embedded in the harbour concrete marks the exact spot of departure.

Amundsen's achievement is not the only historical claim here: Fridtjof Nansen's Fram expeditions — which achieved the farthest north anyone had ever reached at the time — also used this harbour as a departure point, and the combination of Nansen's scientific expeditions and Amundsen's polar flights makes Ny-Ålesund arguably the most historically significant civilian scientific site in the polar regions.

Visiting the settlement is tightly controlled by the Norwegian Polar Institute, which permits small groups of tourists to join guided day tours from Longyearbyen during the brief summer season, with the strict condition that visitors do not interfere with any ongoing research activity and that they stay within designated tourist zones.

The landscape itself is spectacular: the fjord's glacier-fed waters are a deep blue-green, the surrounding mountains are capped with glaciers that reach nearly to the water's edge, and the tundra around the settlement blooms with Arctic flowers in late July, making the setting extraordinary even by Svalbard's elevated standards for dramatic polar scenery.

It is the only settlement in the world where tourists can walk through a fully operational international scientific campus in the High Arctic, with researchers from eleven nations working in the same small village.

The site holds unique polar exploration history — Amundsen launched from here on his first certified North Pole crossing — and visitors can stand exactly where that expedition began.

The surrounding Kongsfjorden landscape of glaciers, tundra, and dramatic fjord geography is outstanding in its own right.

Best season
Summer (June–September) is the only practical window for tourist visits; during winter the settlement operates but access is extremely limited by sea and weather conditions.

The midnight sun in July and August makes for extraordinary photographic conditions, with the sun never setting and the light constantly raking across the fjord and glaciers.
