A closer look

Driving across the Hadramawt coastal plain toward Shibam, the first glimpse of the city hits you without warning: a wall of tall rectangular towers rising from a flat salt flat like a cluster of tall pencils set in sand. This is Shibam, often called the Manhattan of the Desert, though the nickname flattens what is actually a much stranger urban form than any grid city could produce. The towers are eight stories typical, with a few reaching eleven, built entirely of mud brick — the same material that makes the surrounding Tihama region's villages look earthy and low. The difference is that Shibam's builders stacked this humble material into something extraordinary: towers that have stood for five centuries despite being made of nothing stronger than compressed earth and the occasional palm-wood lattice for reinforcement.

The base plan of each tower is typically five meters square, with walls ninety centimeters thick at ground level tapering to forty centimeters at the top. The interior is divided horizontally into rooms circling a central shaft that acts as both staircase and ventilation chimney, pulling hot air up from the street and releasing it above the roofline. The rooms on each floor were historically assigned by function — storage on the ground floor, animal stalls on the second, family quarters above — and this vertical zoning still shapes how families use the towers today. The structural logic is elegant in its simplicity: the tapered wall profile transfers load efficiently to the base, while the central shaft doubles as a thermal chimney that keeps the tower habitable in temperatures that regularly exceed 40 degrees Celsius on the coastal plain below.

Shibam was hit by a catastrophic flood in 1532 that destroyed much of the city. This flood history is encoded in the urban fabric: the towers on the highest ground survived, and that topographic preference still influences where residents prefer to live within the city.

The surrounding wall, built by the British in the early 20th century to keep out raiders, is in the process of being demolished by the municipality because it blocks air circulation and was never structurally integrated with the towers. Its absence opens views and lets the wind through in ways the original builders, who used the wall to create a sheltered microclimate, never anticipated.

What makes Shibam remarkable is not any single tower but the cumulative effect of the whole: from the highest rooftop you can see every tower in the city at once, their flat roofs forming a skyline that changes character completely depending on the angle and the light. At noon the towers cast sharp rectangular shadows that stripe the narrow streets; at sunset they turn the color of dark honey; at night they become silhouettes against a sky so clear and dark that astronomers historically used star sightings from the minaret of the central mosque to establish the city's precise latitude. The mosque itself, rebuilt after the 1532 flood, is the only building in the city that is not primarily residential — its minaret serves as both a religious beacon and a civic landmark visible from every direction on the surrounding plain.

It is the tallest ensemble of mud-brick buildings in the world, an engineering achievement that has no parallel in the history of earthen architecture.

The vertical urban form — stacking eight to eleven stories of compressed earth on a five-meter-square footprint — solves the problem of dense habitation on a flat coastal plain with no natural elevation.

The qanat-based water infrastructure has been maintained continuously for centuries and represents one of the most sophisticated examples of traditional water management in the Arabian Peninsula.

The city's urban fabric encodes its flood history, its social organization, and its climatic adaptations in ways that are legible to visitors who take time to walk the streets.
