Pacific Harbour

Pacific Harbour is a purpose-built adventure destination on the Coral Coast road between Sigatoka and Suva, centred on a small commercial area with resorts, tour operators and restaurants that have developed specifically around the adventure tourism market. Unlike most of Fiji, which is associated with beach holidays and island relaxation, Pacific Harbour exists to deliver an adrenaline gradient, and the town and its operators are entirely organised around that purpose. The development is low-rise and spread out, more of a linear strip along the coastal road than a conventional town centre, and the atmosphere has a practical get-on-with-it quality that visitors either find refreshing or find too focused to be comfortable.

The primary attraction is Beqa Lagoon, which lies directly offshore from Pacific Harbour and is one of Fiji's premier dive sites. The lagoon is known for its shark diving: bull sharks, tiger sharks and reef sharks are regularly encountered in the deep blue water of the lagoon proper, and the visibility is consistently excellent even in conditions that would compromise dive sites elsewhere in Fiji. The shark encounters are conducted at a safe distance by experienced divemasters, and the experience of watching a bull shark circle in clear water at ten to fifteen metres depth is one of the most dramatic available in the Pacific. Introductory dives are available for non-certified visitors.

Beyond diving, Pacific Harbour offers white-water rafting on the Navua River, which descends from the highland interior through a series of rapids and canyons before reaching the coast near Pacific Harbour. The river section used for commercial rafting is rated up to Class IV in international classification, and the scenery ranges from jungle canyon to more open farmland as the river approaches the coast. Rafting is weather-dependent: after heavy rain the river runs higher and faster, which some rafters prefer but which can make the rapids more challenging.

The zip-line course through the丛林 canopy above the town offers views across the lagoon and is accessible to most fitness levels, with guides managing the safety equipment and providing commentary on the local ecology. Skydiving over the lagoon is also available, with panoramic views of the island's interior mountains as a backdrop to the drop; tandem jumps are available for non-qualified participants. The various activities can be booked through operators in the Pacific Harbour centre, and it is possible to combine multiple activities in a single day.

What distinguishes Pacific Harbour from other adventure destinations is the density of activities within a small area. It is possible to do a shark dive in the morning, a river raft in the afternoon and a zip-line in the evening, all from the same small town base, without hours of road travel between them. The beach at Pacific Harbour itself is functional rather than picturesque, and most visitors who stay here are focused on the activities rather than the shoreline. The nearby Coral Coast proper offers better beach experiences for those who want to combine adventure with relaxation.
