Pierre Chanel Basilica

The Pierre Chanel Basilica stands near the village of Poi on Futuna Island, its twin bell towers visible from the sea approach to the island's main settlement area, announcing the religious significance of the site long before the boat reaches the shore and prepared visitors for the cultural weight of the place.

Built from coral limestone in a neo-Gothic style, the basilica is larger and more formally elaborated than the village church that originally occupied the site, its architectural ambition reflecting the importance of the site as the principal place of pilgrimage for the Catholic community of all of Wallis and Futuna.

The twin bell towers anchor the main entrance; inside, the nave is spacious with vaulted ceilings and tall arched windows that fill the interior with light, the proportions of the space and the quality of the stonework giving the church a dignity and gravitas that is appropriate for a national place of pilgrimage.

The altar and side chapels are decorated in a style consistent with the basilica's status as the principal pilgrimage church of Wallis and Futuna, with religious imagery that draws directly on the story of Saint Pierre Chanel and the early days of the Catholic mission on Futuna in the 1840s.

A small museum beside the basilica houses artefacts from the life of Saint Pierre Chanel, including his crucifix, rosary, journals and items from his time as a missionary, the collection offering a concrete and personal window into the history of the man who became the first saint of Oceania.

The museum offers a window into the early days of Catholic mission work on Futuna and the life of Chanel, the objects on display illustrating both the challenges of mission life in a remote Pacific island setting and the personal faith that sustained him during a difficult and ultimately fatal time on the island.

The sanctuary draws visitors interested in Pacific religious history, Polynesian saints and the legacy of the Catholic missions that shaped the culture of Wallis and Futuna, the basilica serving as a destination for pilgrims from across the Pacific who come to honour Chanel's memory and his sacrifice.
