A closer look

Plitvice Lakes National Park protects a karst landscape of extraordinary hydraulic complexity: sixteen lakes arranged in descending cascades connected by waterfalls and underground streams, all fed by rivers that disappear and reappear through the porous limestone geology of the Velebit mountain range, creating a constantly changing pattern of water movement that visitors experience as a sequence of viewpoints along wooden walkways built to float above the lake edges.

The characteristic turquoise and azure colours of the lakes are produced by the dissolution of calcium carbonate from the limestone bedrock, which precipitates as travertine when the water reaches a certain mineral saturation, depositing thin layers that cement mosses and algae into rock over centuries and gradually reshaping the lake basins and waterfall edges in a process that visitors observe as living geology.

The park covers 296 square kilometres of mixed forest — beech, fir, and spruce in the upper elevations, oak and hornbeam in the lower — that change colour dramatically through the seasons, with autumn turning the slopes gold and orange while the snow-melt of early spring swells every waterfall to its maximum volume and creates the most powerful hydraulic spectacle of the year.

The lower lakes, particularly the Great Waterfall at the point where the Korana River exits the system and drops forty metres into the gorge below, are the most visually dramatic, with the upper lakes offering quieter forest walks through beech woods where the lake surfaces reflect the canopy in mirror-still conditions that make it difficult to perceive where the real shore ends and its reflection begins.

The wooden walkway system that allows visitors to traverse the park without disturbing the fragile travertine formations was completely rebuilt and elevated after the 1991 war damage, replacing an older system that had stood since the park was first opened to the public in the 1930s, and now permits access for all mobility levels for most of the circuit.

The travertine barrier system at Plitvice has been accumulating for at least four thousand years; the oldest visible formations predate the Roman period and provide scientists with a continuous geochemical record of climate and vegetation change in the Dinaric karst region that is internationally significant for Quaternary science.

Wildlife in the park includes brown bears, wolves, lynx, and the rare griffon vulture, though sightings require patience and early-morning starts; the forest also supports 161 species of birds and a flora of more than 1,400 vascular plant species, making the protected area significant well beyond its famous lakes.

The park receives between one and three million visitors annually depending on the year, making it one of the most heavily visited protected areas in Europe; visitor management is by timed-entry tickets that cap daily numbers and route visitors through the park in a controlled clockwise or counterclockwise direction to prevent congestion on the narrow boardwalks.

The travertine terraces are a living geological formation, still growing today, and represent one of the most complete examples of karst hydrology in the world; the colour chemistry of the lakes is unmatched anywhere in Europe.

The park protects a substantial area of Dinaric karst forest that is among the last truly wild low-mountain forest ecosystems remaining in south-eastern Europe.

The Great Waterfall and the sequence of sixteen lakes connected by waterfalls can be experienced from both above and below, offering a three-dimensional understanding of the landscape that no photograph fully conveys.

Best season
Spring snowmelt (April to May) produces the largest waterfalls; autumn (September to October) has the forest colours and reduced visitor numbers; summer has the warmest weather but heaviest crowds.

Winter visits are possible but many boardwalk sections are closed for safety when ice forms; the park has a quiet, austere beauty in the off-season.
