Port Hercule

Port Hercule is a natural deep-water harbour formed by the narrowing of the Mediterranean coast at the eastern end of the Principality, and its sheltered waters and the proximity of the Monte Carlo Casino and Monaco-Ville on the surrounding hillsides give it a setting of compressed wealth that is unique among Mediterranean harbours

The harbour is divided visually and practically into two zones: the inner harbour closest to the Condamine market, where working fishing boats and smaller pleasure craft are moored and where the atmosphere is more genuinely local, and the outer harbour where the superyachts moor in permanent or seasonal berths that can cost more per season than a Parisian apartment

The Grimaldi Forum, a white limestone cultural and conference centre, occupies the western shore of the harbour and hosts the Monaco Yacht Show each September, the most important annual gathering of the superyacht industry, when the harbour is filled with vessels of extraordinary size and engineering that dwarf everything visible the rest of the year

The Monaco Grand Prix circuit passes through the harbour district: the tunnel exit and the chicane at the harbour's edge are among the most dramatic points of the circuit, and watching practice sessions from the harbour wall is one of the few free ways to experience the race

The Condamine market, held in the covered market hall at the harbour's edge every morning except Sunday, is the closest Monaco comes to a food market for residents and offers local produce, cheeses and charcuterie alongside fresh fish from the Ligurian Sea landed by the fishing fleet that uses the inner harbour

The quayside promenade that circles the harbour is fully accessible on foot and lined with cafés and restaurants of varying price levels; the eastern quay is the more expensive side but the western quay behind the Condamine market offers better value and a more genuine working-harbour atmosphere

From the upper harbour wall at sunset the view back across the water to Monaco-Ville on its rock, with the casino's white mass above it, is one of the most photographed scenes of the Riviera and rewards the visitor who stays past the coach-tour departure hour

The inner harbour's fishing fleet lands catch daily that supplies some of Monaco's better restaurants, and the fish market that follows the morning auction at around 8 a.m. is open to visitors who want to see the commercial reality behind the superyacht spectacle

The harbour control tower, a modest 1970s concrete structure at the harbour entrance, manages vessel movements in and out of the port and is surprisingly active given Monaco's small size; an average of forty vessels per day pass through the harbour mouth during the summer season

The underwater harbour floor is periodically dredged to maintain the deep-water depths required by modern superyachts, some of which draw more than four metres of water and cannot use many other harbours on the Riviera

The Condamine district immediately surrounding the harbour is the most densely populated part of Monaco and has a genuinely residential character that the tourist-focused areas around the casino and the palace lack, with several local schools and a twice-weekly outdoor market on the place d'Armes.

The Monaco Yacht Show in September brings the world's largest and most technologically advanced private vessels to Port Hercule, an extraordinary spectacle available free from the quayside.

The harbour district offers the most authentic local food market in Monaco at the Condamine market, and the working fishing fleet gives the inner harbour a character completely different from the outer superyacht basin.

The Grimaldi Forum conference centre and the harbour wall Grand Prix viewing points are both free to access and offer completely different but equally vivid experiences of Monaco's identity.
