Sandy Ground

Sandy Ground is the most developed beach area in Anguilla, running for roughly a mile along the island's southwest coast where the Caribbean Sea produces calmer conditions than the Atlantic-facing north shore, making it the preferred swimming beach for visitors staying in the Blowing Point and West End corridor.

The sand is fine, pale and firm, creating conditions that are comfortable for walking and suitable for beach sports, and the gradual slope of the sea floor means that even at high tide the water only reaches waist height fifty metres from the shore, a characteristic that makes Sandy Ground consistently popular with families and less confident swimmers.

The beach is anchored at its southern end by the Blowing Point ferry terminal, where the ferry from St. Maarten docks and where arriving visitors first encounter Anguilla's beach culture as they walk from the terminal across the road to the sand, a sequence that has become almost a ritual entry point for the island's tourist economy.

The row of beach bars and restaurants along the landward edge of Sandy Ground is one of the densest concentrations of eating and drinking options on any Anguilla beach, and the social scene here is notably more animated than at the island's more remote beaches, particularly on weekend afternoons when local visitors join tourists at the same tables.

Water sports operators at Sandy Ground offer kayaks, paddleboards and Hobie Cat rentals, providing a more active beach experience than the passive sunbathing that characterises some of the quieter east-coast beaches, and the availability of equipment means that visitors can self-organise a half-day of water activity without advance booking.

The western terminus of Sandy Ground connects to a series of smaller coves and beach segments that continue towards West End Bay, creating a continuous beachwalking possibility that is unusual on Anguilla where many beaches are separated by rocky headlands or private property; walking the full length from Blowing Point to West End takes approximately ninety minutes at a comfortable pace.

Sunset from Sandy Ground faces the Caribbean open horizon to the west, and the combination of the pale sand, the reflection of the lowering sun on the shallow water and the silhouette of the ferry terminal and palm roofs creates a visual identity that appears in almost every published photograph of Anguilla.

The beach's popularity does create crowding during the peak winter season, particularly around the central beach bar area, and visitors seeking solitude should arrive early in the morning or focus on the quieter northern and southern ends of the beach away from the main bar cluster.

The beach's westward-facing orientation provides the most reliable sunset views of any Anguilla beach, a feature that draws visitors back in the late afternoon for a different quality of light and atmosphere from the bright midday scene.
