Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is vast before it is beautiful: 82 domes in varying sizes rise over a structure that covers 22,412 square metres, and the courtyard's carpet — woven in Iran over 38 months by 1,200 artisans — is considered the largest hand-knotted carpet in the world. The mosque was commissioned by the UAE's founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and completed in 2007, with materials sourced from Greece, Macedonia, Iran, Turkey, China, and Morocco. The white marble that clads every surface is sourced from the island of Thassos in the northern Aegean.

The marble work is the first thing that arrests you: the exterior walls and all courtyard surfaces are clad in white marble that stays cool to the touch even in summer heat. The floral patterns in the courtyard pavilions are inlaid in coloured stone — lapis lazuli, mother of pearl, red jasper, turquoise — using the pietra dura technique perfected in the Mughal architecture of India. The effect is jewelled without being garish: the patterns read as white-on-white from a distance and resolve into colour only as you approach.

The four minarets are 87 metres tall, slender and slightly flared at the top, each topped with a finial that carries the call to prayer. They are placed at the corners of the mosque's perimeter in a symmetrical composition that is visible from several kilometres away on the Corniche road approaching the city. The minaret design deliberately echoes the Ottoman style, referencing the broad sweep of Islamic architectural history that the mosque seeks to embody.

The reflecting pools cover several hectares and run the full length of the mosque's western facade. On calm evenings the pool surface is mirror-flat and the entire marble structure — minarets, domes, archways — doubles perfectly, creating an image of almost ceremonial stillness. The evening light is particularly photogenic: the marble shifts from pure white at noon to warm ivory at sunset, and the pools turn gold before fading to black.

The mosque functions as a live place of worship, not primarily as a tourist attraction, and it holds up to 40,000 worshippers for Friday prayers. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside of prayer times, and the experience of hearing the call to prayer echoing across the courtyard and pools at sunset — with the building to yourself before or after the worshippers have departed — is among the most memorable in the Gulf.

It is the largest mosque in the UAE and one of the largest in the world, a statement of ambition in white marble and gold that is impossible to ignore.
