Skógafoss

A broad waterfall on the Skógá river in south Iceland, dropping about 60 metres over a wide cliff edge; the spray frequently produces a single or double rainbow on sunny days.

A closer look

Approaching from the lower car park, the full width of the fall appears all at once; the sound and the spray are noticeable from a distance.

Climbing the staircase to the upper viewing platform, the river's drop re-appears in reverse, and the surrounding farmland opens up across the cliffs.

On sunny days a single or double rainbow forms in the spray; the wide ledge above the fall is a working sheep pasture and a popular photo stop.

It is one of the most powerful single-drop waterfalls in Iceland and a recognised south-coast landmark.

A staircase to the right of the fall leads to an upper platform that changes the perspective.

The Skógar Folk Museum next to the car park documents south-coast farm life; it is not the waterfall but it shares the same name.
