A closer look
Soufrière Hills Volcano rises from the southern half of Montserrat, a classic steep-sided stratovolcano whose 1995 awakening transformed the entire island. For most of the 20th century it was considered dormant, its crater covered in forest and its geology a matter for academic journals rather than emergency response planning. That changed on 18 July 1995 when a massive explosion shattered the silence and began a process that would eventually destroy two-thirds of Montserrat's territory.
The eruption that followed was not a single dramatic event but a prolonged crisis that has now lasted over thirty years, making Soufrière Hills one of the most closely monitored volcanoes in the world. Pyroclastic flows — superheated clouds of gas, ash and rock that move at hurricane speed — poured down the volcano's flanks and buried everything in their path. The capital Plymouth was progressively engulfed. The island's airport, hospital, schools and most of its infrastructure were destroyed.
The human cost was enormous. While the initial evacuations saved lives, the economic and social destruction was total. An estimated two-thirds of the population of approximately 11,000 people fled abroad, many never to return. Today Montserrat is home to fewer than 5,000 people, most of them living in the northern third of the island that was never touched by the eruption. The demographic transformation of the island has been permanent.
From a scientific perspective the eruption has been extraordinarily valuable. Soufrière Hills has provided volcanologists with unprecedented data on the mechanics of pyroclastic flows, volcanic dome collapse, and the long-term social reconstruction of a community after catastrophic eruption. The Montserrat Volcano Observatory, established in the aftermath of the first explosion, has become one of the most cited research institutions in volcanic geophysics.
The volcano is not quiet. As of 2026 it remains in an active eruptive phase with continued seismic activity and periodic explosions that send ash columns above the crater. The southern two-thirds of the island remain an exclusion zone, and the boundary is enforced by the Montserrat government in coordination with the Observatory. The contrast between the green northern hills and the grey, ash-covered south is visible from space.
Visitation is strictly controlled. Organized tours from the safe zone approach the volcano's northern perimeter and include interpretive stops where guides explain the eruption sequence and ongoing monitoring programme. Standing at the edge of the exclusion zone and looking south toward the summit, watching the steam and occasional ash emission, provides a visceral understanding of why this landscape is both a natural wonder and a genuine hazard.
The volcano's name — Soufrière Hills — comes from the French word for sulphur, a reference to the volcanic gases that have always seeped from the crater. The sulphur smell is still detectable on windy days even in the northern safe zone. In the exclusion zone the smell is stronger and the ground is noticeably warmer, a constant reminder that the system remains alive and that the next major eruption is not a question of if but when.
It is the most studied active volcano in the eastern Caribbean and one of the few volcanoes in the world to have produced sustained pyroclastic flows in the modern era.
The eruption fundamentally reshaped Montserrat's landscape, demography and governance, creating a natural laboratory for the study of volcanic risk and post-disaster recovery.
