Access to the plateau is via the road that runs from the coast at Aiwo inland to the central depression, and several informal tracks lead from this main route to viewpoints where the full extent of the mining damage can be appreciated, though visitors are advised not to attempt to walk into the active rehabilitation zones without local guidance as the surface is unstable and some of the excavation pits are of unknown depth, with steep sides that make them hazardous especially when the edges crumble underfoot.
