A closer look

The park's centrepiece is a chain of eight volcanic mountains known as the Virunga Massif, six of them still active, rising abruptly from the Albertine Rift floor to over 4,500 metres and mantled in cloud forest that feels primordial and impenetrable.

Descending from the highlands into the rift valley, the landscape opens to the blue-grey expanse of Lake Edward, whose papyrus fringes shelter one of the last viable populations of the critically endangered hippopotamus, an animal hunted almost to extinction elsewhere in the Congo basin.

The habituated mountain gorilla families near Bukima Camp offer one of the few places on earth where a close, hour-long encounter with a silverback and his harem can be arranged under rigorous conservation protocols, an experience of startling physical proximity with our closest living relatives.

Night drives across the savanna plains of the southern sector reveal the park's most unexpected residents: large herds of elephant moving between regenerating farmland and protected forest, a testament to decades of anti-poaching investment that has slowly reversed the catastrophic losses of the 1990s.

The Rwenzori colobus, the blue monkey, and the endemic Virunga warbler occupy the forest canopy in layered strata, while below, the swampy ground supports Africa's highest density of forest buffalo and a small but growing population of the shy, solitary okapi that survives in the contiguous Ituri Forest to the north.

Mount Nyamulagira and Mount Nyiragongo dominate the skyline north of Goma: Nyamulagira erupts frequently, sending lava flows deep into the forest where they incinerate everything in their path before cooling into black ridged fields, while Nyiragongo's persistent lava lake in its summit crater is one of only a handful on the planet.

The volcanic geology around the Nyiragongo massif creates distinctive soil conditions that support a unique succession of pioneer plant communities on recent lava fields, starting with lichens and mosses and gradually giving way to shrubby vegetation as the rock weathers over centuries, a process visible across the landscape in different stages of ecological recovery.

The Montane forest belt above 2,000 metres holds exceptional plant diversity, including giant lobelias and tree ferns that create an almost otherworldly botanical landscape, with the higher elevation zones characterised by Afro-alpine vegetation adapted to the cool, wet conditions of the Albertine Rift highlands.

Lake Edward itself is a remnant of a much larger paleolake that once filled much of the Rift Valley, and its ecological significance is amplified by the presence of approximately 40 fish species, many endemic to the lake, that support both the hippopotamus population and the local fishing communities operating from the lakeside villages of Vitshumbi and Kyavilonge.

It is Africa's oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, encompassing an extraordinary range of ecosystems from glacial peaks to tropical savanna in a single protected area.

The mountain gorilla habituation experience is among the rarest wildlife encounters in the world, limited to a handful of permits per day under strict conservation management.

The active volcanoes and the world's most accessible persistent lava lake provide a geological spectacle found nowhere else on the continent.

Before you go

Current details checked July 2026

Best season
June to September offers the driest conditions, easiest access to gorilla trekking zones, and peak savanna wildlife activity around Lake Edward.

Volcano hikes are possible year-round but the dry season provides clearer summit views; Nyiragongo overnight climbs are typically suspended during the March–May rains.

Editorial guidance
Before you go 1
Gorilla-group visits are strictly limited in number; permits are issued through the Congolese wildlife authority ICCN and must be arranged well in advance through licensed operators. Permit availability varies and should be confirmed directly with ICCN.Editorial guidance
Before you go 2
FCDO travel advisory for DRC (gov.uk, updated 2026-07-29) advises against all travel to parts and against all but essential travel to other parts; high terrorist threat including ADF activity in North Kivu and Ituri provinces. Any visitor should use only registered operators with direct local coordination capability and monitor current FCDO travel advice.Editorial guidance
Before you go 3
Yellow fever vaccination is compulsory for entry into DRC; carry your certificate. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended year-round.Editorial guidance
Before you go 4
The park is most accessible during the June–September dry season when roads are passable and wildlife viewing conditions are most favourable.Editorial guidance

Practical notes

Note 1

Virunga became Africa's first national park in 1925.

Note 2

It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.

Note 3

The park covers approximately 7,800 km² across the provinces of North Kivu, Ituri, and Maniema.

Note 4

Current visitor numbers remain very low by global standards due to persistent security concerns, making permit availability less constrained than at Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park.
