Straddling the volcanic caldera of a supervolcano, Yellowstone National Park is a landscape of contradictions: geysers that erupt predictably alongside rivers that run warm, bison herds that wander through thermal fields, and a caldera floor that rises and falls centimetres each year. It is also the oldest national park in the world, established in 1872.

A closer look

Old Faithful's predictability — it erupts approximately every 90 minutes — is both its charm and a slight disappointment: the anticipation before a known event is less electric than stumbling on a geyser eruption without warning in the backcountry thermal basins where the ground is unstable and the risk of stepping into boiling water is genuinely present.

Grand Prismatic Spring, the largest hot spring in North America, is best appreciated from the elevated boardwalk on the Excelsior Mountain overlook, where the vivid turquoise centre, orange margins and deep brown outer rings are visible as a complete chromatic gradient — a sight that satellite imagery has made famous but that still surprises in person, the colours more saturated than any photograph suggests.

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, with its 120-metre waterfall at the upper and lower falls, is a miniature of the Grand Canyon in colour and drama but compressed into a smaller space — the yellow rock from which the park takes its name is most vivid here, bleached white by thermal water at its margins, and the canyon walls glow in the afternoon light.

Bison are not zoo animals here: the herd that moves through the Hayden Valley in autumn is genuinely wild, capable of running at 50 km per hour and indifferent to traffic; the sight of dozens of them moving across the valley floor against a thunderstorm backdrop is one of the iconic American wilderness images, and the park's roughly 5,000 bison are the descendants of a herd reduced to around 100 animals in the early 20th century.

The Lamar Valley is wolf country — reintroduced in 1995 after decades of absence, the wolf packs here are monitored by NPS biologists and visible to patient observers at dawn; the reintroduction is one of the most celebrated ecological restoration experiments in North American conservation history, having restored predator-prey dynamics that had been absent since the 1930s.

Mammoth Hot Springs steps down a hillside in travertine terraces formed by calcium carbonate precipitation from geothermal water — the formation is in constant slow motion, with active channels shifting over weeks and old ones drying to bleached white, so that each visit is different and the terraces function as a visual record of the previous season's water flow.

Winter in Yellowstone strips away the tourist veneer: the geysers steam more dramatically in cold air, the wildlife concentrates in the valleys, and the only access is via oversnow vehicles — a completely different park that rewards those willing to endure the cold, and one that reveals how much of the summer experience depends on the infrastructure that winter removes.

Yellowstone sits above one of the world's largest active volcanic systems, and the evidence of its geothermal power — over 10,000 thermal features and approximately 500 geysers — is visible in a way that nowhere else on earth makes so accessible.

The 1995 wolf reintroduction to Yellowstone is one of the most studied examples of a trophic cascade: the return of wolves changed elk behaviour, which allowed riverbank vegetation to recover, which stabilised river channels, which in turn changed the course of rivers — an entire ecosystem rewired by the return of one species.

The bison herds are genetically pure descendants of the original American bison and the last remaining wild herd in the United States — the Yellowstone bison population is the last genetically undiluted bison population in the country.

Best season
June offers the best combination of snow-free roads, high water in the falls, and green valley grass for wildlife; September brings thinner crowds, warmer weather and the rut season for elk. Winter access requires guided snowcoach or oversnow vehicle.

July and August are peak season but also the most crowded; the Norris Geyser Basin boardwalks can reach 50 C in summer thermal temperatures. April and October are shoulder seasons with limited services but exceptional wildlife viewing as animals concentrate in thermally warm valleys.
