Young Island

A 25-acre private island resort in the Grenadines archipelago, Young Island lies just 100 metres off the southern shore of St. Vincent and is reached in five minutes by a hand-poled rowing boat or water taxi from the mainland, a crossing that immediately establishes a sense of removal from the everyday and signals that the pace of life here is fundamentally different.

The island is cloaked in tropical greenery—coconut palms, sea grape, sea almond and flamboyant trees that provide shade and structure—and its interior footpaths wind between the vegetation, making it feel larger than its modest 25-acre footprint suggests and giving every cottage a genuine sense of privacy and seclusion from other guests on the island.

Snorkelling along the island's eastern edge reveals a healthy fringing reef where parrotfish, angelfish, sergeant major and occasional eagle rays move through staghorn and brain coral formations, with water visibility typically exceeding 15 metres in the dry season from January to April.

The guest cottages are timber-frame structures with high-pitched woven-thatch roofs, louvred shutters and outdoor garden showers; they are spaced well apart along the shoreline and on small knolls inland, maintaining privacy without sacrificing views of the sea or the string of Grenadine islands visible on the western horizon.

A freshwater swimming pool is carved from natural stone on the island's southern terrace, surrounded by deck chairs and palm shade, offering an alternative to the sea when the Atlantic swell runs higher during the early summer months from May onwards.

Dining is communal at the open-air pavilion restaurant, where fresh-caught fish, local root vegetables and seasonal tropical fruits feature on the menu; the atmosphere is social and unhurried, and the restaurant's terrace overlooks the beach and the open water beyond.

Young Island is managed as an exclusive resort with a permanent staff-to-guest ratio that allows for personal attention, and the island's pace—no televisions in rooms, no paved internal roads, no amplified music after dark—deliberately encourages the kind of stillness that makes even a short three-night stay feel genuinely restorative.

The island's position near the southern end of St. Vincent makes it a convenient base for combining a private-island retreat with mainland activities: guests can arrange day trips to Fort Charlotte above Kingstown, to the La Soufrière volcano trailhead, or to the Vermont Nature Trail in the island's interior, returning to the island's calm by evening.

It offers one of the most complete private-island resort experiences in the southern Caribbean, with a healthy fringing reef accessible directly from a sheltered beach.

The five-minute boat crossing from St. Vincent makes it easy to combine a Young Island stay with other St. Vincent activities without a long flight or ferry connection.
