Mayotte

A cluster of small rocky islets in the lagoon northwest of Dzaoudzi, popular with snorkellers for their clear water, abundant fish life and the colonies of seabirds that nest on the rocks throughout the year.

The two rocky volcanic islands at the eastern end of Mayotte, connected by a causeway and containing the airport, the historical fort of Dzaoudzi, and the administrative centre of the island on Petite-Terre.

A volcanic crater lake in the centre-south of Mayotte, famous for its vivid turquoise waters, the smell of sulphur at the water's edge, and its position in a landscape of secondary forest and agricultural clearings.

The second-highest peak in Mayotte at 594 metres, covered in dense forest and offering sweeping views over the island and its lagoon from a bare volcanic summit.

A sheltered white-sand beach on the south coast of Mayotte, popular for snorkelling, owned by a dive club that maintains the site and offers equipment rental and boat trips to nearby reef sites including the Coral Garden.

A protected marine reserve on Mayotte's west coast, recognised as one of the finest snorkelling and diving sites in the Indian Ocean for its coral formations and resident sea turtle populations.
